Apple iPhone 6 Has NFC But Does Not (Yet) Support its Use for Connecting with Cameras

In my books about two of Sony’s compact cameras with Wi-Fi features, the DSC-RX100 II and the DSC-RX100 III, I discuss the fact that, with many Android smartphones and tablets, you can use those devices’ built-in NFC capability to establish a Wi-Fi connection with the Sony camera. NFC stands for near field communication, a feature involving the use of a radio antenna inside the device. When the camera and the phone or tablet are placed in physical contact with each other, their NFC antennas establish a Wi-Fi connection automatically so you can transfer images from the camera to the phone, and control the camera remotely using an app on the phone.

If the phone or tablet does not have NFC, then you have to establish the connection by going to the Settings app on the phone or tablet and selecting the Wi-Fi network that is generated by the Sony camera. The first time you do this, you also have to enter the password for the network. So, NFC cuts through one or two steps, and makes it considerably easier to get the camera connected with the phone or tablet over the Wi-Fi network.

In both of those books, Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II and Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 III, I discuss the point that many Android devices include NFC capability, but iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad do not.

With the recent release of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, both of which were said to include NFC features, I was hopeful that the new iPhone models would be able to use NFC to connect directly to these two cameras (and other cameras that have similar features). But no such luck. It has been disclosed that, at least for the near future, Apple is limiting the use of NFC to its new Apple Pay service, which will let you pay for purchases using the iPhone by pointing it at a device in a store or business that has the necessary equipment. For the time being, Apple is not permitting the NFC capability to be used for other purposes, such as communicating with camera apps.  Here is a link to an article that explains the situation.

I will continue to monitor developments in this area, and, when and if Apple permits the iPhone’s NFC capability to be used for connecting to cameras, I will post an update on this site.

Text-Only Paperback Version of Sony RX100 II Guide Book is Now Available

sonyrx100iitextonlycoverAs of today, Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II is available in a paperback edition that contains the full text of the original book, but without the nearly 400 images that the original guide contains. I have produced this new version as an experiment to see if readers are interested in having the contents of the book available for reference at a price considerably lower than the price of the full-color paperback.

The text-only paperback edition is available now for $14.95 from Amazon.com. As is stated in the book’s Introduction, I will, on request, send a free PDF with all of the text as well as the color images to anyone who purchases the text-only paperback. Once you purchase that edition, send an e-mail message to contact@whiteknightpress.com to request the PDF. Just include your order number or a portion of your order confirmation message from Amazon (or other seller) to show that you purchased the paperback.

I am including below some images of the actual book, so you can get an idea of what it looks like. The book has 304 pages of text, including table of contents and index, as opposed to the 455 pages of the book with images. This edition contains only a few images, showing the camera’s controls, and those images are reproduced in black and white. It contains all of the text of the original, full-color book, except for some text that relates to images and that would not be useful without having those images available. Of course, if you buy the book and receive the free PDF, you will be able to see all of the images and read the discussions about them.

Latest Update on Availability of Sony RX100 II Book Paperback Edition

1937986187If you have visited this site recently, you know I have been having problems with the availability at Amazon.com of the paperback version of Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II. For some reason, Amazon started listing the book as unavailable except from third-party sellers, even though they should have a steady supply available from the print-on-demand company that prints them. I am still working to get that issue resolved. In the meantime, today I received a good shipment of books from the printer myself, and they are available for sale at the list price of $25.95 through Amazon.com, under my seller name of White Knight Press. I process and ship orders very quickly; orders received by 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time will ship the same day. I hope Amazon will soon show the book as available for direct shipment from Amazon, but until that happens I plan to keep this book in stock myself as much as possible.

More on Availability of Sony DSC-RX100 II Book at Amazon.com

1937986187A few days ago I noted here that my newest book, Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II, was having availability problems at Amazon.com, and that the paperback version was listed there as available only through third-party sellers. The problem appeared to be solved earlier today when I first wrote this post, and the paperback version book was briefly listed as available again directly from Amazon for $25.95.  Not long after that, though, the book went back to being available only from third-party sellers. I hope to have some books available to ship myself within a few days. Until then, I will keep monitoring to see when Amazon finally gets the availability straightened out.

The paperback book also is available from Barnes & Noble and other online sellers, and in downloadable versions through this site and elsewhere. For details, please see the book’s main product page at this site.

Availability of Sony RX100 II Guide Book at Amazon.com

My newest camera guide book, Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II, recently went on sale at Amazon.com in its paperback version.  It was available for quick shipment direct from Amazon for several days, but then, a couple of days ago, for no apparent reason, Amazon started listing the book as available through third-party sellers only.

I have checked with Lightning Source, the print-on-demand company that provides copies of the book directly to Amazon, and they are investigating what happened with the distribution channel. I hope they will have the problem fixed within a day or so.  It’s very frustrating to have a new book listed at Amazon, when potential purchasers cannot buy it directly from Amazon and get Prime shipping and other standard services.

In the meantime, you can find the book listed as available for immediate shipment at Barnes & Noble through its online site, bn.com.

Of course, the book also is available in downloadable versions through this site, as well as through Amazon, the iBookstore for Apple, Barnes and Noble, and Kobo.

PDF and Ebook Versions of Sony DSC-RX100 II Book Are Now Available

1937986187As of today, the three downloadable versions of Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II are available for purchase for $9.95 in three electronic versions: PDF, mobi  (for Kindle), and ePub (for iPad, Kobo, Nook, Sony readers, and other compatible devices). You can get more information about the book and about the downloads from the book’s main information page at this site.

The book also is available for purchase for $25.95 in a paperback edition from Amazon.com and other online sellers, and from this site’s eBay store.

Full-Color Guide Book to Sony DSC-RX100 II Camera is Now Available to Order in Paperback from Amazon.com

1937986187As of today, the paperback version of Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II is listed for sale at Amazon.com. If you would like to visit the book’s product page at Amazon, you can click on this link to the page, or you can click on the button below, which also will take you to that page. The list price of the book is $25.95, but Amazon may offer it at a slight discount from time to time.

The book also will be available in three downloadable formats: PDF, mobi (for Kindle), and ePub (for iPad and other Apple devices, as well as Sony, Kobo, and other compatible e-readers). Those versions are still being developed; if you order them now, they will be sent to you as soon as they are ready, probably about October 23.  For more information about purchasing those versions of the book, please visit the book’s information page at this site.

In addition, you can order the book directly from White Knight Press through my eBay store. Here is a link to the book’s page on eBay. I will be receiving my shipment of books within about a week, and any books ordered on eBay will be shipped as soon as I receive them.

Guide Book to Sony DSC-RX100 II Now Available for Pre-Order

Today, as expected, I received the proof copy of the paperback version of Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II from the printer.  The proof looks fine, and so I have approved the book for production.

The book will start showing up with a listing at Amazon.com within the next few days. At first, it will probably be listed as being out of stock or unavailable, then as shipping within 1-3 weeks or something of that sort, and then, maybe within a week or so, as shipping within 24 hours.

For now, in response to some requests from people who wanted to pre-order the paperback version, I have listed the book for sale on eBay on a pre-order basis.  If you purchase a copy there, I will ship it as soon as I receive a shipment of copies from the printer.  I ordered them today, and my copies should arrive here within about a week.  The price of the book is $25.95. This is higher than the price of the RX100 book; the reason for that is that the RX100 II book is considerably longer.  The new book has 455 pages, while the RX100 book has 378.  The printing costs for a full-color book like this are quite high.  It may be that Amazon.com will offer the book at a discount at some point, but I have no control over the price that Amazon charges.

If you would like to see the eBay listing  and consider pre-ordering a copy, please click on this link to the eBay page for the book. To see more information about the book, including its table of contents, index, and an excerpt, please click on this link to the book’s information page at this site.

Update on Status of Guide Book to Sony DSC-RX100 II

Sony-RX100-II-Book-Cover-High-QualityThe next book coming from White Knight Press is Photographer’s Guide to the Sony RX100 II, a complete, full-color guide to the operation of the RX100 II camera, successor to the very popular RX100. On October 9, 2013, the book was sent to the print-on-demand company that will be printing the paperback version of the book. If there are no production delays, the printed book should be available for sale within about 10 days to 2 weeks after that date.

The electronic (downloadable) versions of the book are in the process of being prepared; that process may take a bit longer. Those versions should be available by late October if all goes well. I will continue to provide updates as the book moves toward publication.

Accessories for the Sony RX100 II Camera

I have just put together a video that demonstrates some of the numerous accessories that are available for the Sony RX100 II camera. The video covers the Sony electronic viewfinder, external microphone, and filter adapter, as well as some other viewfinder options, a battery charger, remote control, and Sony’s external LCD display screen. The video does not discuss flash units, which would be a whole topic in themselves, and it does not show any cases, because there are so many options in that category.

Here is the video, which went on YouTube yesterday:

I discuss all of these accessories, and others, in my new book, Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II, which will be published within the next couple of weeks.
